What is Setsubun?
Setsubun is a traditional Japanese seasonal event celebrated in early February, marking the transition from winter to spring. It is a time associated with clearing away bad luck and welcoming good fortune for the new season. One common tradition is throwing roasted soybeans to symbolically chase away bad spirits and invite good luck.
What is Eho-Maki?
Eho-Maki is a special sushi roll traditionally eaten during Setsubun.
It is enjoyed once a year as a way to celebrate the new season and wish for good fortune. The roll is traditionally eaten uncut, while facing the year’s lucky direction, and people quietly make a wish as they eat.
This Year’s Lucky Direction
Each year has a designated lucky direction, known as Eho. This year’s lucky direction is South-South-East (SSE). Facing this direction while eating Eho-Maki is believed to symbolize aligning oneself with good fortune for the year ahead.
